How can nurse be sensitive and flexible towards their patients?
|
A nurse can be sensitive and flexible towards their patients by listening to their patients and the patient's families. People who are experiencing a health care crisis may express their needs in different ways. If someone has been told that their condition is terminal, they may lash out at others who are caring for them as a way of coping with the frustration of losing control over their lives. A nurse who is sensitive towards their patients would realize this, and be flexible by allowing extra time to care for this type of patient, and by offering choices the patient can control to minimize patient distress. The nurse could ask the patient if they would rather have the curtains open or closed, or if the patient would like their bath before or after lunch, for instance. If the nurse gets a patient who is depressed rather than angry about their diagnosis, the nurse could be sensitive by offering to answer any questions they may have, by being sincere when answering, and not giving baseless encouragements that do not take into consideration the reality of the situation, like a nurse who says , "don't talk like that" to a patient who is asking about disposing of possessions before death.
